After increasing protests from around the world over the treatment of orca whales at their theme parks, Sea World has announced that one of their parks will be ending their killer whale shows.
Sea World in San Diego plans to gradually decrease and eventually stop their killer whale shows – with the official end to this form of entertainment by 2017.
Ever since the 2013 documentary ‘Blackfish’, visitors to the killer whale shows at Sea World have decreased as people protest the treatment of the whales in the parks.
‘Blackfish’ focuses on an orca owned by Sea World Orlando known as Tilikum. The film expores the treatment of the whales in Sea World parks and also on the humans killed by orca Tilikum.
Although the plan to stop the orca shows is only in place at the San Diego park, animal rights activists are happy that a step has been taken. It is their hope that the end of these shows will also lead to the end of orcas being bred in captivity for entertainment.
