More than 20,000 revelers have taken part in the annual Tomatina celebration in Spain.
On the last Wednesday of August each year, the tiny town of Buñol , Spain, hosts the world’s largest food fight: La Tomatina.
This year over 160 tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes were thrown at each other in Spain during the epic food fight.
This festival started around the end of World War II. The Tomatina is said to have originated from a spontaneous bust-up between locals in 1945, and has since drawn a huge following across the globe.
Officials encourage participants to follow a few rules. These include crushing the tomatoes before throwing them, wearing old clothes as nothing survives the intense pelting of more than a hundred tons of pulpy fruit, and they can’t start chucking tomatoes until the official blast of cannons.
